Following Hurricane Florence in September 2018, Flip Flops Donuts abandoned its flooded shack on Bogue Inlet Pier Road and moved to its current location at 7702 Emerald Drive. Now in its 10th year, Flip Flops Donuts got better by adding more options to a breakfast menu enjoyed by thousands of locals and vacationers alike. The MORE is all about kettle-boiled bagels, apple fritters, cinnamon rolls, and drip, espresso, and iced coffee. We will always continue to welcome home donut lovers of all types. Whether you prefer raised or cake donuts, glazed, iced, or filled, we've got you covered.

Why Our Donuts Taste Different

It started with an obsession. I wanted to recreate a donut you simply cannot buy anymore — lighter, sweeter, fresher than anything on the market today. That search led me to Al and Bob Pelton, two brothers who built a beloved donut empire in the 1940s and '60s using one unlikely ingredient: potato flour. The more I dug, the more I found. Vernon Rudolph — Mr. Krispy Kreme — used it. Bill Rosenberg — Mr. Dunkin' Donuts — used it in his original recipe. There was something to this.

I tracked down a man named Doug Bagley, who had spent years replicating the Pelton brothers' formula. Then I discovered that Dawn Foods made a mix with potato flour already built in. The rest is history.

Potato flour produces a donut that is sweeter and lighter than anything made with wheat flour alone. Our customers call it a Fresh from the Fryer taste — even hours after we make them. One note worth sharing: some people assume our donuts are all potato flour. They're not — and that means they are not.

Raised or Cake — We Make Both.

The donut world divides into two camps: raised and cake. Raised donuts start with high-gluten flour and yeast. That combination produces the light, airy, pull-apart texture our regulars come back for. You'll find them as glazed rings topped with fresh icings, as Bismarcks filled with fruit, jelly, or crème, and as our rotating daily specials — apple fritters and cinnamon rolls among them.

Cake donuts use low-gluten flour and baking powder — what gives them that slightly dense, soft interior with a barely-there crust. Classic rings, plain or rolled in cinnamon or powdered sugar.
